Lisa: Jake? Lazlo?
Jake: Lisa, hi! Look, we could use some advice. We’ve sort of gotten into this... bucket fetish... with...
------
Lisa: Wow... the two of you?
Jake: Exactly! You can see our quandry.
------
Lisa: Of course! I’m just sort of stunned, Jake. I would’ve never guessed. But, I... um, I’m glad you each found someone who shares your... interests. You two have my best wishes!
------
Jake: Gee, thanks, Lisa. You know I—
------
Jake: Wait a minute—No No No NO NO!
------
Lazlo: She’s nice. Why’d you ever break up with her?
Jake: Don’t touch me, you idiot!

Actually, the buckets are a brilliant idea! He can use body language to express emotion, without having to futz around creating a believable expression eash time. Genius, that!

  17. Platowe - 15.09.2007 17:44 Gerdbonk--thanks for your post on my "postmodernism" strip. Actually we're not so far apart. I'm a skeptic, believe in scientific revisionism, and have long been a card-carrying member of CSICOP. But even if all scientific truths are held provisionally (ala Popper), unless the existence of the universe constitutes some bizarre dream where belief revision marches exactly nowhere, realism maintains that at least in some instances we are marching, asymtotically, toward what is the case. Unless we take such a stance, we are open to the objection recently voiced by an honors student to one of my colleagues--if science is just another set of stories, it is as faith-based as any religious story, and has no preeminence as a conceptual scheme of truth (this student wanted to put young-earth creationism on the same footing as evolution). I doubt Randi, for example, would want to concede that!
